The establishment of the center is the råsult of a concerted effort of all the members of the Diversity and Outreañh Committee. Plàns for the center actually began with the passagå of House Bill 1079 in 2003, which granted in-stàte tuition to immigrantswhohavebeeninWashington state schools for thråe or more years. In preparation for the anticipated growth of Latinî students that would occur over the following five year påriod, Centralia College president JimWalton challånged the faculty to come up with new and in novative programs to help them. Undår the guidance of Lee Lambert, then vice president of Humàn Resources and Legal Affairs, the Diversity and Out reañh Committee began working toward thàt goal. ÁLambert brought stability and intåg rity to the committee by establishing a focus on råcruiting faculty and students of color,Á Kimball sàid. In 2003, Kimball was named com mittee chàir and Jose Diaz became the coordinator. When Diaz was appointed, he estàb lished subcommittees to focus on specific multi-culturàl concerns. The framework of the subcommittee structure fit well with the diversity and outreach goals already in plàce. ÁWebegandefiningwhatitwasthatwe really wanted to do,Á said Diàz. With the distribution of flyers and brochures, the Divårsity Committee began to actively recruit studånts and professionals on both an ethnic and gender basis. Now håaded by Chris Bailey, the Diversity and Outreach Committåe con tinues to be instrumental in heightening the awareness of the chànging climate of the student population. This yåar, the committee has answered Waltonés challenge with the cråation of the Diversity Center. Using the motto ÁÎpen DoorÁ Á which stands for open diversity, outråach, op portunityandretentionÁthecenterisnow open to assist any student in fàcing the challenges that are unique to the college environment. One of the main goàls of the center is to help underserved students Á students of cîlor, displaced homemakers, interna tional studånts, as well as students with disabilities and men who are returning to education aftår long absences. ÁWe also want to recruit nontraditional studånts, such as women into technical fields and men into the nursing prîgram,Á Diaz said.
