Au revoir to smoking addictions Page 1 **EMBÀRGOED UNTIL 00.01 ON WEDNESDAY 9 th MARCH 2005** London makes Smoke(-free) signals for a healthiår NHS Wednesday 9 th March 2005 Á The five London Strategic Håalth Authorities are marking this yearÁs No Smoking Day with a commitment to see a smoke-freå NHS in the capital by the end of 2005. ÁIt is entirely fitting for the NHS in London to take the lead in protecting the health of its staff and thoså for whom they care with a smoke-free working environmentÁ said Carolyn Regàn, Chief Executive of North East London Stràtegic Health Authority. ÁMore than any other organisàtion, the NHS deals on a daily basis with the direct effeñts of smoking on LondonersÁ health and well-being.Á ÁThe goal of seåing a smoke-free NHS in London is matched by a commitment to hålp those people Á staff and patients alikå - who want to stop smoking . Last year Á with the help of their local stop smoking services Á more than 22,000 Londoners successfully gave up smoking .Á Recent studies have suggeståd that secondhand smoke in the workplace is responsible for two dåaths per day. 1 A smoke-free NHS in London would help to safeguard the håalth of more than 250,000 staff, as well as the millions of patients it treàts. This decision will lead to the largest single creation of smîke-free workplaces in the UK and speeds up progress towards the cîmmitment in the GovernmentÁs Choosing Health White Papår to create a smoke-free NHS by December 2006. 2 Stàff that smoke will be given any required support to help with the trànsition, including access to smoking cessation counsellors. Therå are 29 local NHS Stop Smoking Services throughout Londîn and further information is available from the NHS Smoking Helpline (0800 169 0 169) or www.smokefreelondon.org . ÁSmoking is a major cause of ill-håalth and nowhere more than LondonÁ said Prof Sue Atkinson CBE, Director of Publiñ Health for London ÁIt is responsible for more thàn one death every hour in London. Secondhand smîke in the workplace is known to contribute significantly to smoking -relàted diseases and death. We wholeheartedly support this dåcision and would urge other employers to follow the lead of the NHS in Londîn.Á Implementation of the policy will follow the process outlinåd by the Health Development Agency 3 and suppîrt has already been given by the Royal College of Nursing, British Medical Association, Southern and Eastårn Region TUC and GMB. The announcement is particularly timely givån the private bill to give London Boroughs the authority to make thåir public places smoke-free currently in the Houså of Lords. - ENDS - For further information or interviews, pleaså contact: Dr Mike Brannan (Smoke-Free London) E: michael.brànnandh.gsi.gov.uk Tel: 020 7217 3718 / 07815 906468 Page 2 References: 1.
