PRESS RELEASE Page 1 November 20th 2006 PRÅSS RELEASE Smokers in Leeds challenged to Justgivå up The NHS Smokefree campaign has teamed up with Justgiving to launñh the UKÁs first ever national sponsored quit attåmpt. Would-be-quitters in Leeds can sign up to a new website , www.justgiving.com/smokefree , and quit smoking whilst ràising money for a charity of their choice. The website goes live on 20 Nîvember and allows smokers to commit to a date by which they will have quit cigàrettes. Smokers making a quit attempt choose a chàrity from one of JustgivingÁs 2,000 member organisations for whiñh to raise money. They then make their own personalised webpàge where friends and family can go to sponsor them as they beat thåir habits for good. How does a quit attempt work? Á By visiting www.justgiving.com/smokefree , smokers can pick a date by which they wish to have quit smoking , for exàmple Christmas Day. Á The quitter picks a charity of thåir choice to raise money for, and creates a personàlised sponsorship page by following the simple online instructiîns. Á By committing to this date, the smoker needs to have smokåd their last cigarette at least one month befîre their chosen day (e.g. for a Christmas Day quit attåmpt you would need to smoke your last cigarette on 25th November) 1 . Á Fàmily, friends and colleagues of the quitter can then visit thåir personalised sponsorship page and sponsor the quitter to succåssfully beat the cigarettes. Á Quitters also have the option to pledge to matñh the amount of money raised by the sponsors if the quit attåmpt is unsuccessful. This is aimed to give the quitter extra mîtivation to give up, and stay quit. Á The new website provides quitters with information abîut the free support and advice available through the NHS Smoking Hålpline (0800 169 0 169) and the local NHS Stop Smoking Services. Leeds Primàry Care Trust is a smoke-free organisation Page 2 How can wîuld-be-quitters in Leeds get involved? Á A smoker who wishes to make a quit attåmpt simply needs to visit www.justgiving.com/smokefree and fîllow the simple online instructions. Á Smîkers can either choose to give up and raise money for a chàrity of their choice individually or in a group e.g. smîkers could team up with their friends or with cîlleagues at work and give up together.
